Data Center Infrastructure Challenges

1. Cost Pressures

The traditional data center has become overly complex, costly, and extremely inefficient. Arguably, these are the biggest hurdle that prevents businesses from fully reaping the productivity benefits offered by other innovations occurring within the data center, such as server virtualisation, storage over Ethernet and evolution in application delivery models.

Traditional architectures that have stayed unchanged for over 10 years employ excessive switching tiers, largely to work around the low performance and low-density characteristics of the devices used in those designs. Growth in the number of users and applications is almost always accompanied by an increase in the number of devices required and their associated “silos”, for both connectivity and security.

Adding further insult to injury, these upgrades introduce new untested operating systems to the environment. The ensuing additional capital expenses, rack space, power consumption and management overheads directly contribute to the overall complexity of maintaining data center operations. Unfortunately, instead of containing the costs of running the data center and reallocating the savings into the acceleration of productivity, enhancing business practices, the IT budget continues to be misappropriated into sustaining existing data center operations.

Challenges Data Centers have:

  • Constraints on physical space, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC) and operations as features and network services are turned on.

  • Increasing environmental, human and infrastructure cost pressures.

  • Energy & “green” business mandates.

Virtualisation. Increased server utilisation from 10% to 80%!

  • With an embedded virtual chassis in the Juniper Switch EX4200 acting as one logical switch, reduces links without sacrificing High Availability & securely isolate businesses & applications. Savings of up to 44% on power consumption and 55% on space compared to competitive offerings.

  • Ideal for top of rack or end of row installations. Reduces latency, rack space, HVAC, energy and administrative costs; easy to cable and manage with a full feature set and efficient uplinks.

  • Satisfy needs for increased bandwidth, carrier class network reliability and end-to-end QoS from server to server across Data Centres.

2. Security

Traditionally, organisations have been forced to balance and compromise network security versus performance for applications in the data center. Imtech Telecom Global partners with Juniper Networks to eliminate this trade-off consideration and make it possible for data centers to have the robust network security they desire, along with performance to meet the most demanding application and user environments.

Going further, Juniper Networks can consolidate network security for the data center into fewer devices, with centralised policy and visibility to greatly improve the operational efficiency of the data center environment. As a result, you can support greater scale and advanced application demands with improved agility and less cost, without trade-offs such as sacrificing security for performance.

Challenges Data Centers have:

  • Protect from internal, external threats & accommodate remote use.

  • Minimise security and performance tradeoff.

  • Streamline and meet compliance regulations.

  • Overlaid vs. integrated security.

Strategic solutions to market challenges:

  • Meeting the session scaling challenge.

  • Proactively endure increased attack complexities unscathed.

  • Real-time intervention to stop incident spread, reducing downtime & damage.

  • Provide secure, integrated & virtualised services across the Data Center Infrastructure and through remotely accessed resources.

SRX-series Services Gateway. 120Gbps Firewall throughput, 4m concurrent sessions, 440GE interfaces!

  • Highest performing Firewall in the industry allowing you to deliver value-add products and services.

  • Migrate your customer’s security point services onto this scalable, flexible service gateway platform of FW, IPS, VPN and enhance their performance.

  • Data Centers can run their entire switching, routing, and security infrastructure – all on JUNOS, a common OS which is an industry first.

 3. Manageability & Visibility

Juniper Networks JUNOS software is the field-proven operating system powering Juniper Networks routing, switching and security infrastructure in the data center. It enables the consolidation of security and networking onto a common operating system with feature consistency and interoperability across the entire data center network.

Manageability and flexibility of the data center are enhanced to address business needs as they arise and improve data center operations. A common set of tools are used to monitor, administer and troubleshoot the network; allowing data center operations teams to function more efficiently with less training, while providing higher availability. Unlike any other networking infrastructure OS on the market, JUNOS software provides one operating system, enhanced through a single release train and developed upon a common modular architecture, giving enterprises a  clear advantage.

JUNOS software follows a strict single release train, which delivers a superset of features in each subsequent release. The single code train ensures a high quality product with lower error rates and greater functionality as compared to other vendor alternatives, which are forced to maintain multiple versions of code based on different development methodologies.

Challenges Data Centers have:

Escalating complexity & geographically distributed legacy infrastructure is an impediment to service delivery.

Despite multiple management systems, lack Enterprise-wide visibility & control.
Provisioning tasks are time consuming.

Consolidation. Bypass the aggregation network layer!

  • Use EX & MX-series switching and JUNOS to go from access layer to the core on a single OS.

  • Reduce complexity, latency, costs (CAPEX, OPEX), power, administration.

  • As one common OS across routing, switching and security, JUNOS allows you to capture a greater share of your customer’s High Performance Network (HPN).

  • By consolidating HPN on JUNOS, a single network OS unmatched in reliability and simplicity, you allow your customers to reap operational gains.

4. Scalability & Performance

Data center consolidation and virtualisation trends are accelerating in an effort to optimise resources and lower costs. Consolidation, virtualisation and storage are placing greater network performance and security demands on the network infrastructure.

While server virtualisation greatly improves server resource utilisation, it also greatly increases the amount of data traffic on the network infrastructure. Applications running in a virtual server environment require low latency, high throughput, robust QoS and High Availability. Increased traffic per port and performance demands tax the traditional network infrastructure beyond its capabilities. Furthermore, high-bandwidth and low-latency data storage requirements (and the increased adoption of iSCSI and NAS) add to the demands on the network infrastructure. With the future standardisation of Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), this technology promises to place even greater bandwidth and performance demands on the network infrastructure.

IT data centers are rapidly migrating to the high-performance network infrastructure recommended by Juniper Networks to improve data center-based productivity, whilst lowering the time to market for new data center applications and reducing operational costs.

Challenges Data Centers have:

  • Accommodate high performance needs from service-enabling applications, increased traffic, collaboration & users.

  • Inefficiencies - increased downtime due to upgrades, security issues and multiple & inconsistent OS versions.

Overcome security & performance tradeoffs!

  • MX series switching 10GB line interfaces scales to 960)GB total network capacity.

  • Deliver high-performance, QoS-based networks for iSCSI, SAN and NAS storage implementations.

  • Designed for High Performance Networks (HPNs), the Dynamic Services Architecture on the SRX-series allows you to integrate FW, IPS and other services, simplifying management to provide the flexibility you need to maximise ROI.

  • As one common OS across routing, switching and security - JUNOS allows you to manage your HPN.
